Lighting the Path to Empowerment: Reveal’s Partnership with Land for Women in Rwanda

Four months ago, the first solar lights flickered on at Imboni farm in Rwanda. Today, that moment represents far more than electricity—it’s a story of resilience, innovation, and community transformation.

At Reveal, we asked ourselves a simple question: How could we move beyond carbon reporting and invest in something tangible that strengthens communities?

The answer led us to a partnership with Legacy of War Foundation, Land for Women, and Solektra Rwanda. Together, we delivered a complete solar and internet solution for a women-led farming cooperative rebuilding after conflict. 

Why This Matters

Energy poverty is one of the greatest barriers to progress in rural communities. Without reliable power, farmers struggle to irrigate crops, store produce, and connect to markets. For women-led collectives, these challenges are compounded by systemic inequalities.

 Before the installation, everything stopped when the sun set. Crops spoiled overnight. Walking home in the dark never felt safe. Connectivity was out of reach, limiting access to markets, supplies, and support.

By introducing solar power and internet connectivity, we’re not just lighting homes—we’re lighting futures. This initiative aligns perfectly with Reveal’s ESG commitments: 

Environmental: Solar energy reduces reliance on fossil fuels, supporting climate resilience.

Social: Women gain economic independence and safer working conditions.

Governance: Transparent partnerships and measurable impact reinforce ethical business practices.

The Impact So Far

The Imboni Collective now has power and internet access, and the benefits are profound: 

Extended working hours: Lighting allows women to work later, increasing productivity and income.

Safety and security: Animals, greenhouses, and stored goods are illuminated and better protected from theft. Women can patrol their land at night with confidence.

Education for children: More light means local children can study after dark, opening doors to brighter futures.

Community transformation: Power and internet aren’t just for the farm—neighbours can access them too, creating ripple effects across the community.

Digital connectivity: Farmers can research market trends, connect with other farms, and develop products for wider markets. 

A Proven Model for Impact

This idea began with a conversation—and it created a template that can now be repeated. 
A 3 kW solar PV system, a 5 kWh battery, and full internet access. Installed in a single day. Practical, scalable, and ready to change lives. 

Four more Land for Women sites are still without power, with five additional farms planned next year. This is an opportunity for organisations to support something that delivers environmental and social value in the clearest possible way.
