In a proactive move to protect its frontline employees, Halfords has partnered with Reveal to introduce body-worn cameras across its retail locations. From initial pilot in 2023 to roll-out, the initiative is making a significant impact.

The decision came after a rise in incidents of violence, intimidation and abuse directed at employees. For Chief Executive Henry Birch, protecting employees was paramount:

“The health, safety, and wellbeing of our colleagues is our top priority. The installation of body-worn cameras has played a crucial part in supporting our risk minimisation efforts.”

What began as a pilot of three cameras in 35 stores quickly proved its value. Team members reported feeling more confident and better protected, with 90% saying they felt safer at work and 85% noting a clear de-escalation of incidents when cameras were in use.

From senior leaders, to store managers and associates, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Store employees described a noticeable shift in customer behavior, with the front-facing screen helping to calm customers as they realised they were being recorded.

“Whenever the camera is switched on, it’s like flipping a switch with the customer,” shared Carl Taylor, Divisional Director at Halfords. “It completely reduces the level of aggression.”

Beyond deterrence, the cameras provide clear, secure video and audio that can support law enforcement investigations when necessary. But for most, the biggest impact has been cultural: reinforcing the efforts Halfords is making to create a safer, more respectful working environment.

“I feel like Halfords care about me as a colleague,” said Oliver, a Store Specialist. “Introducing these cameras was a really good investment.”

Halfords’ Profit Protection Partner, Ali Lodge, praised the collaboration with Reveal:

“Reveal made it a seamless project. Their support with training and rollout was fantastic.”

Now working with over 70 retailers globally, Reveal is proud to highlight how body-worn cameras are improving colleague wellbeing and helping reduce retail crime.
