Front-facing screens are a signature feature of Reveal’s body-worn cameras. While many body cameras on the market are designed for covert recording, ours are built with a clear purpose: to calm situations before they escalate.

What Is a Front-Facing Screen?

A front-facing screen is an LCD display located on the same side as the camera lens. It shows a real-time view of the recording or playback of captured footage. By default, the screen is active, but it can also be turned off when no illumination is needed - what we call “stealth mode.”

When the screen is on, people can see themselves being recorded. This simple yet powerful feature adds transparency, reassurance, and accountability to interactions across many sectors - whether it’s employees interacting with customers, clinicians engaging with patients, or first responders supporting people in high-stress situations.

“One might assume that cameras could create a barrier or a sense of mistrust. However, we’ve found the opposite to be true in most cases. When patients and visitors understand that cameras are there for everyone’s safety, it often leads to a heightened sense of mutual respect. It’s about creating a safe environment for both staff and patients.”

Key Benefits

  • Increased Transparency
The front-facing screen makes it clear that recording is happening openly. This visible accountability helps reassure everyone involved and shows that nothing is hidden.
  • Building Trust
By allowing people to see what’s being recorded, body cameras with front-facing screens promote openness. In retail, healthcare, transportation, and other industries, this visibility helps build trust and encourages more respectful behavior.
  • De-escalating Aggression
Knowing a camera is recording often helps defuse tension. People tend to moderate their behavior when they see themselves on screen, which can reduce aggression and create safer outcomes for both staff and the public.

“The cameras are visible - you can see them on the uniform - so in my opinion, just their presence is enough to make some people moderate their behavior. However, there are studies confirming that people actually calm down much faster when they can see an image of themselves on screen. So the Reveal front-facing screen is a great design because it might help de-escalate events before any physical aggression takes place.”

  • Encouraging Positive Behavior
The screen serves as an independent witness. When conduct breaks down, the footage provides a fair, unbiased record of events, holding everyone accountable.
  • Supporting Training and Feedback
Front-facing screens make it easy to replay footage in the field, when permissions allow. A quick review of an incident provides valuable learning opportunities for teams and supports ongoing professional development.

“You can clearly see yourself being recorded. I think that makes customers think twice about being abusive or coming across as threatening because they can see themselves.”

Oliver, Store Specialist at Halfords

Active Display vs. Stealth Mode

The screen doesn’t always need to be visible. In some cases, users prefer to keep it off and record discreetly in stealth mode, which turns off both the display and indicator lights - creating a flexible tool that adapts to any environment.

Conclusion

Front-facing screens transform body-worn cameras from a passive recording device into an active presence that shapes behavior, builds trust, and enhances safety. Whether in healthcare, retail, emergency response, or security, Reveal’s unique approach continues to make a measurable difference - helping teams feel supported and the people they serve feel reassured.
