Front-facing screens are a signature feature of Reveal body-worn cameras. While many body cameras on the market are designed to record covertly, ours are built with a clear purpose: to calm situations before they escalate.

What is a front-facing screen?

A front-facing screen is an LCD display located on the same side as the camera lens. It shows a real-time recording view or playback of captured footage. By default, the screen is active, but it can also be switched off when no illumination is required - a so-called stealth mode

When the screen is on, people can see themselves being recorded. This simple but powerful feature adds transparency, reassurance, and accountability to interactions across many sectors - whether that’s staff dealing with customers, clinicians engaging with patients, or emergency responders supporting people in high-stress situations.

"One might assume that cameras could create a barrier or a sense of mistrust. However, we've found the opposite to be true in most cases. When patients and visitors understand that cameras are there for everyone's safety, it often leads to a heightened sense of mutual respect. It's about creating a safe environment for both staff and patients."

Key Benefits

  • Increased Transparency
The front-facing screen demonstrates that recording is taking place openly. This visible accountability helps reassure everyone involved and shows that nothing is hidden.
  • Building Trust
By allowing people to see what is being recorded, body cameras with front-facing screens foster openness. In retail, healthcare, transport, and other environments, this visibility helps build trust and encourages more respectful behaviour.
  • De-escalating Aggression
Awareness that a camera is active often helps defuse tension. People tend to moderate their conduct when they see themselves on screen, which can reduce aggression and create safer outcomes for staff and the public alike.

The cameras are visible – you can see them on the uniform – so in my opinion, just their presence is enough to get some people to moderate their behaviour. However, there are studies that confirm people actually calm down much quicker when they can see an image of themselves on-screen. So the Reveal front-facing screen is a great design as it might help de-escalate events before any physical aggression has taken place.

  • Encouraging Positive Behaviour
The screen acts as an independent witness. When conduct breaks down, the footage provides a fair, unbiased account of events, holding all parties accountable.
  • Supporting Training and Feedback
Front-facing screens make it easy to replay footage in the field, if permissions are in place to allow it. A quick review of an incident provides valuable learning opportunities for teams and supports ongoing professional development.

"You can clearly see yourself being recorded. And I think that puts customers off potentially being abusive or coming across threatening as they can see themselves."

Oliver, Store Specialist at Halfords

Active Display vs. Stealth Mode

The screen doesn’t always need to be visible. In some scenarios, users prefer to keep it off and record discreetly in stealth mode which turns the display and indicator lights off, creating a multi-purpose tool adaptable to any environment.

Conclusion

Front-facing screens transform body-worn cameras from a passive recording tool into an active presence that shapes behaviour, builds trust, and enhances safety. Whether in healthcare, retail, emergency response, or security, Reveal’s unique approach continues to make a measurable difference by helping teams feel supported and the people they serve feel reassured.
